• What is electrochemotherapy ?
ELECTROCHEMOTHERAPY is a new method in the treatment of cancer. It combines the administration of an anticancer drug and electrical field pulses at the site of the tumor. By increasing the permeability of the cell membrane, a targeted injection of the cytotoxic molecule ensures a precise, efficient eradication of tumors.
• What are the benefits of this method ?
The treatment of solid tumors by electrochemotherapy in the horse, cat and dog has many advantages over other techniques (surgery, chemotherapy, etc..) :
- Visible results of first treatment within 48 hours
- The recurrence rate is very low or nonexistent in particular for the treatment of sarcoids
- Aesthetic aspect: no burns or scars
- Absence of side effects associated with chemotherapy due to lower dosage of anticancer drugs
- Possibility to treat a large area in a short time
- The relatively low cost of each treatment
• What is the procedure ?
The treatment takes place in a veterinary clinic.
The animal is anesthetized.
• How many sessions are required for full remission?
It depends on the size of the lesions:
- For nodules below 3 mm diameter : 1 to 2 sessions
- For nodules with a diameter greater than 7 mm : 4 sessions may be required
